Counter Terror Expo 2010

Counter Terror Expo is the only major international exhibition and conference of its kind to take place in the United Kingdom.

The 2009 event broke expected attendance figures by a factor of 50 percent. More than 4,000 qualified personnel from government, military, law enforcement, intelligence and private sector organisations from the United Kingdom and elsewhere attended the event.

The centrepiece of this leading international event for security and counter terrorism is the prestigious two- day conference featuring leading international experts who will debate the most critical and topical issues concerning the international counter terrorism community. As the international community grapples with the formidable and evolving threat from terrorism, governments, private businesses, law enforcement and security agencies in every country, must be forever improving their response strategies and building new capabilities to defeat terrorism.

Today, information security professionals are under increasing pressure to secure the perimeters of their organisation as well as its data and employees. While organisations experience difficulties in protecting the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of information in today’s highly networked systems environment, employees also need to understand their roles and be adequately trained to perform their responsibilities.

IMPACT, represented by its Director of Training, Skills Development & Outreach, Philip Victor, has been invited to speak at the Cyberspace and National Security session. This session will focus on enhancing the global community’s capacity to prevent, defend and respond to cyber threats.

Here, IMPACT will lend insight to identifying the central features of the cybersecurity challenge, responding to the increasing use of cyber space by terrorist organisations, and building enhanced multilateral cooperation to meet international cybersecurity challenges.

FutureGov Forum, Malaysia

FutureGov Forum Malaysia is Alphabet Media’s seventh annual regional government conference and brings together an unrivalled international speaker line-up comprising government thought leaders, experienced practitioners and industry experts, to deliver a balanced mix of real-life best practice case studies, expert presentations and interactive panel discussions.

FutureGov Forum Malaysia seeks to explore both the technical and strategic outcomes of adopting efficient information management strategies by focusing on some of the biggest questions in public sector information technology.

IMPACT, represented by its Chairman, Datuk Mohammed Noor Amin has been invited to speak on cyber crime issue. Given that international criminal gangs are finding ways to access government data for identity theft, fraud, commercial malfeasance, and espionage, IMPACT will share the threats that organisations are exposed to as they embrace new technologies to mitigate these risks. More importantly, IMPACT will lend insight to how it can help governments of the world counter these threats through domestic and international, as well as public and private partnership.

7th Worldwide Security Conference

EWI’s seventh annual Worldwide Security Conference (WSC7) is a platform to reframe perceptions of international security threats and opportunities, and determine concrete steps to protect people, economies and infrastructure around the world.

The seventh annual Worldwide Security Conference will:

Continue the tradition of articulating new goals for global security and the steps needed to achieve them
Stimulate progressive improvement in the way global security is managed and reviewed
Bring together leading policy makers, specialists, business executives, community leaders and journalists from around the world for debate and networking.

IMPACT, represented by its Chairman, Datuk Mohammed Noor Amin, has been invited to speak at the conference. The focus will be on Asia Pacific’s cybersecurity.

Cyber threats strike from virtually anywhere in the world. No organisation can contain these threats by domestic measures alone. IMPACT seeks to bridge the gap between domestic and international, as well as public and private organisations to ensure the protection and security of world’s cyber space.

Here, IMPACT will lend insight to the world’s threat landscape, particularly in the Asian region. IMPACT willshare best practices, legislation and policies that are available to meet the challenges of cybersecurity as well as concrete initiatives that IMPACT has undertaken to address these beyond creating awareness through various outreach activities.

IMPACT has also been invited to participate in other WSC meetings, in particular the private consultation on International Pathways to Cybersecurity.

2009 DC3 Digital Forensic Challenge Result

With all the talent, knowledge, and energy that 44 submitting teams put into their 2009 DC3 Digital Forensic Challenge Findings Reports, it was quite the job to complete the grading on time.

The DC3 Digital Forensic 2009 challenge was a new 'twist' from the previous years, presenting the participants a mock-up of what an actual examiner might face in a Digital Forensics Labs. This made the results much more complicated than in prior DC3 Challenge years.

Through the grading process, an exceedingly talented and knowledgeable group of folks out were discovered. This point was brought home by the depth of knowledge and research applied to the discovery, solution, and interpretation of the finds submitted from the supplied media. Processes, procedures, script creation, etc. and good old fashioned common sense ruled the day for all when it came time for solutions. Teams demonstrated considerable talent, skill, and effort in their submissions. The sheer hard work that went into this year’s DC3 Challenge represented a win for all. IMPACT salutes and congratulates all challengers alike.

There were, however, only a limited number of prizes to be awarded. The winners for each category were:

DC3 Prize (U.S. Winner): Little Bobby Tables (1772 pts)
SANS Prize - High School (U.S.): pwnage (1309 pts)
SANS Prize - Undergraduate (U.S.): WilmU (1732 pts)
IMPACT Prize (International & Overall):
DFRC (2014 pts)

Overall rankings and rankings per prize are listed on the 2009 DC3 Challenge stats page. All winning teams were notified by DC3 and its prize sponsors.

IMPACT sponsored the winner for the non-U.S. category. The winner for this category was from Korea.

IMPACT and the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center partnered to provide a Digital Forensic Challenge opportunity for non-U.S. entries. This opportunity provided an international aspect to a previously U.S.-based event and allowed additional insight into global methods to fight cyber crime.

The winner of the International category from an IMPACT partner country will fly to Malaysia for a tour of the IMPACT global headquarters in Cyberjaya and receive a commemorative plaque. The winner will also be eligible for potential grants to attend EC-Council and SANS courses.
